Help for Depression (Christian Perspective)

Causes

Depression often stems from three main causes: thoughts, circumstances, and physical/mental imbalance. Identifying the cause(s) is key to finding solutions.

1. Thoughts

Common negative thoughts include:

Be honest about thoughts needing change. Passivity and lack of motivation can keep you in a negative rut, making life harder.

Solutions:

2. Circumstances

Loneliness, marriage problems, loss, trauma, or other negative experiences can feel overwhelming, but through Christ, we are “more than conquerors.” He offers joy, peace, and constant presence (See “Am I Saved?”).

Paul was “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Corinthians 6:10). Suffering exists, but joy comes through God’s Word and Spirit.

What you can do:

3. Physical

If depression feels “out of the blue,” it may be physical (about 5% of cases).

Balance your brain chemicals:

SSRIs are common antidepressants to maintain serotonin levels but may have side effects. Explore other serotonin-boosting methods:

Other chemical causes: high serotonin, low dopamine, estrogen dominance, or hormonal fluctuations. Consult a doctor and research treatments beyond medication.

4. Spiritual Oppression

Spiritual attacks can cause depression. One friend found freedom through Jesus after 2 years. Pray for insight if no other cause fits.

Steps if oppression is suspected:

  1. Repent: Examine unrepentant sin or unsurrendered areas.
  2. Renounce: Reject lies of the enemy.
  3. Replace: Adopt a godly perspective (Philippians 4:8).
  4. Resist: Submit to God, resist the enemy, and claim victory (James 4:6–7).

Note: Depression may have multiple causes, requiring a multifaceted approach.

Jesus is our hope and anchor (Hebrews 6:19). Seek Him fully!
