Why a Biblical Foundation Is Necessary for Counseling

A Biblical foundation is necessary for counseling, as it gives a proper understanding of God's nature and human nature, and overall a right perspective on life.

When counseling those with addiction or behavioral issues, we must take human nature into consideration, the fact that all have sinned and no one is truly good; as well as share the hope of freedom through Christ's power in us (Romans 8:1-14; Galatians 5:16; Ephesians 3:16--21), and encourage them to find transformation in their minds (Philippians 4:8; Romans 12:2; John 17:17; 2 Corinthians 10:5).

When counseling those with relationship difficulties, we can share Biblical wisdom for resolving conflict; for example, the importance of meekness (Proverbs 15:1), humility (Proverbs 13:10), and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32).

Those who struggle with issues of self-worth can find assurance of their value by recognizing the fact they "wonderfully made" by God (Psalm 139:14) and He has a calling for their lives, along with ability to accomplish their purpose, as they serve Him (1 Corinthians 12:4-31).

Those who are suffering can find reassurance of God's love while also acknowledging His wisdom; although He cares for us and loves to bless, He also has higher purposes that are spiritual and eternal, and knows that sometimes suffering is necessary to accomplish those purposes (2 Corinthians 4:17; 1 Peter 1:7). He offers peace and joy in this life (Galatians 5:22-23; John 16:33) and the security of eternal life in heaven, where there is no suffering (Revelation 21:4).

By offering a Biblical perspective in every area of life, counselors can effectively meet the needs of those they minister to, and point them to Christ for true change.
