Is Anyone a Good Person?

First of all, who is right, you or God?

The Bible says, “There is none good, no, not one” and “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23).

We have to take God at His Word, that we are all sinners.

1- It's like breaking a window; if the window is cracked in one place, it's broken, as James 2:10 says, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.”

You might say you'll fix it, but you don't have what it takes. We can't make up for the wrong we've done. Our relationship with God has been broken, and Jesus is the only one who can bridge the gap (1 Timothy 2:5). Anything good we try to do* will only be an offense (Isaiah 64:6; Luke 18:10-14; Romans 8:8).

2- All sin comes from the same root, the same root of selfishness. We may think our sins are not as bad as someone else’s, but all sin is on the same road, and if we were allowed to go down that road with no hindrances– if God took away all the external motivation– we could easily end up in the same sins as everyone else.

3- We all come short. Comparing ourselves to others doesn't work. Whether we're one inch short or a mile short, we are still not making it to heaven without Jesus.

4- The greatest command is to love God with our whole hearts, and we have all broken that command - by choosing our own way above His.

*While anything good before salvation doesn't count, anything built on the foundation of Christ does count.

“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:11
